Any hockey fan knows the insane hockey skills of William Nylander. Speed absolutely unmatched along with stick handling skills. A little look into his 2021-2022 stats so far 15 goals and 18 assists in only 31 games that brings him to a total of 33 points so far this season. It's not really a surprise that another Nylander has taken the spotlight in the NHL considering Willys father Micheal Nylander had quite the career himself with 679 points in 920 games before retiring after the 2007 season. Williams brother Alexander Nylander had a decent but short lived career in the NHL he was sent back to play in the AHL by the Chicago Blackhawks.
Willy Styles
There's a reason they call him Willy Styles and it's not just because of his style and skills although that is part of it, the nickname was given to him by Joe Thornton who is referred to as Jumbo Joe by the team. Obviously we've all seen Willy score, assist and handle the puck with absolute style but what we haven't all seen is the other reason he got the nickname and trust me when I say it says it all on his instagram. Willy Styles Instagram There is never a moment where he isn't making outside of the box fashion choices and personally I think that's another thing that makes Willy unlike most players.
His game play
But to get back to the game play side of things he is very well recognized for some incredible shots that he made such as this one in the video down below where he pulled it through his legs and scored, definitely one of the best shots of his career in my opinion.
We can't disregard Willy's dominance on the power play already tallying up 14 power play points this season. He definitely has proven he can capitalize on opportunities when they come to him. He can sometimes be described as a lazy player and on some occasions I would have to agree with that statement, however I think we can all agree he makes up for that in his points, William Nylander if anything is a goal scorer and an important part of the Toronto Maple Leafs. He is currently playing on the second line with Alexander Kerfoot and Ilya Mikheyev. They have proven to have good chemistry and accumulated a total of 7 points combined in the last game they played on January 1st 2022 against the Ottawa Senators where the final score ended up being 6-0 for the leafs. So definitely no doubt William Nylander has quite the impact on this team.
Contributions off ice
Not only is Willy a well respected and liked player he is also a well respected and liked person for things he does off the ice. Personally I think that what makes a good hockey player great is their contribution off the ice and Willy definitely does not fall short. In 2019 when he changed his number from 29 to 88 he offered to pay for anyone that had a Nylander jersey for the numbers to get changed, that isn't something he had to do he did it because he's a good person and he wants to support the people who support him. He also does a lot of charity events such as a charity golf classic or a charity ping pong tournament and in 2018 he made a large charity donation to a Toronto hockey program. All these things make William Nylander a great player on and off the ice and why he's an incredibly crucial part of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The leafs have gone through a lot of goal tenders in the past years, they had of course they're previous main goal tender Freddy Andersen, then they had a large amount of backup goalies including Micheal Hutchinson, Garret Sparks, Joseph Woll, David Rittich and of course their present starter goalie Jack Campbell. Campbell started playing in a more starter role in the 2020-2021 season when Andersen was out a lot with an injury or just overall in a slump. People including me were weary of having someone in goal other than Freddy because for a point in time Freddy had been one of the best goal tenders in the league, however, Campbell pleasantly surprised a lot of leaf fans finishing the season with an incredible record of 17 wins 3 losses and 2 OT losses in a total of 22 games. He set an NHL record winning 11 consecutive games at the beginning of the season which gave the leafs a lot of confidence in the season and their goaltender. Overcoming obstacles Jack Campbell is definitely a...
One of the greatest talents on the leafs is their very own Auston Matthews, he has already had such an amazing career and he's so young only 24 years old. He was drafted to the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2016 first overall and had probably one of the most impressive NHL debuts in history scoring not only a hat trick but 4 goals in his first ever NHL game he set a record and became the only player in modern era to score 4 goals in his first NHL game. In 2016 the leafs were not a very good team at all they were in the rebuilding process and when Auston Matthews joined the team and came out and did that I was very exciting for leaf fans everywhere. He definitely didn't slow down after that and went on to win the Calder trophy that season and helping to bring Toronto to the playoffs which had only been the second time since 2004. It's crazy to think about the fact that Auston Matthews is from Arizona, hockey isn't very popular there and not very many good hockey players come o...
John Tavares is one of the most impressive players the leafs have with his record beginning at the OHL all the way till now is insane, he was recognized by the OHL at the age of 14 and drafted no1 pick to Oshawa in 2005, he started playing in the OHL at the age of 15 and his first season there he finished with a total of 77 points which is insane and there was no surprise when he won OHL and Canadian hockey league rookie of the year and if you think that's impressive just wait until you hear this, his next season he almost doubled his points finishing the season with 72 goals and 134 points in total. What an outstanding season at such a young age, and that season he was named most outstanding player in the OHL and player of the year in the CHL but I doubt anyone is too surprised by that. One achievement that I'm sure he's very proud of is beating the great ones (Wayne Gretzky's) OHL goal record. He had so many achievements in the OHL and not much changed for him when he...
